چکیده

We present the results of an observational study of the efficiency of deep mixing in globular cluster red giants as a function of stellar metallicity. We determine [C/Fe] abundances based on low-resolution spectra taken with the Kast spectrograph on the 3m Shane telescope at Lick Observatory. Spectra centered on the 4300Å CH absorption band were taken for 42 bright red giants in 11 Galactic globular clusters ranging in metallicity from M92 ([Fe/H]= −2.29) to NGC 6712 ([Fe/H]= −1.01). Carbon abundances were derived by comparing values of the CH bandstrength index S2(CH) measured from the data with values measured from a large grid of SSG synthetic spectra. Present-day abundances are combined with theoretical calculations of the time since the onset of mixing, which is also a function of stellar metallicity, to calculate the carbon depletion rate across our metallicity range. We find that the carbon depletion rate is twice as high at a metallicity of [Fe/H]= −2.3 than at [Fe/H]= −1.3, which is a result qualitatively predicted by some theoretical explanations of the deep mixing process. Carbon abundances and 12 C / 13 C from globular cluster giants

The behaviour of the ∆ν=2 CO bands around 2.3 μm was examined by comparing observed and synthetic spectra in stars in globular clusters of different metallicity. Changes in the C/C isotopic ratio and the carbon abundances were investigated in stars from 3500–4900 K in the galactic globular clusters M71, M5, M3 and M13, covering the metallicity range from –0.7 to –1.6. We found relatively low ca...

DDO Photometry of M71: Carbon and Nitrogen Patterns Among Evolving Giants

We present V , B − V, and DDO C(41 − 42) and C(42 − 45) photometry for a sample of 75 red giants down to MV = +2 in the relatively metal-rich Galactic globular cluster M71. The C(41− 42) colors reveal a bimodal distribution of CN band strengths generally anticorrelated with CH band strength as measured by the C(42 − 45) color. Both DDO colors agree well with those found in 47 Tucanae – a nearby...

The CNO Isotopes: Deep Circulation in Red Giants and First and Second Dredge-up

It is demonstrated that deep circulation mixing below the base of the standard convective envelope, and the consequent “cool bottom processing” (CBP) of the CNO isotopes, can reproduce the trend with stellar mass of the 12C/13C observations in low mass red giants. (This trend is opposite to what is expected from standard first dredge-up.) Our models assume that extra mixing always reaches to th...

Aluminum Abundances on the Red Giant Branch: Testing Helium Mixing as a Second Parameter

Although globular cluster horizontal-branch (HB) morphology is determined primarily by the cluster metallicity, observations have shown that clusters with similar metallicities sometimes have very different HB's, indicating the existence of a second parameter. Sweigart (1997, 1999) suggested that deep mixing on the red giant branch (RGB) may be a second parameter if He is mixed into the stellar...
